Are Candle Trimmers Really Necessary?   The first burn of a candle is the key to providing the proper even burn for prolonging the life of the candle. The burn should be long enough to create a melt pool that covers the top of the candle to the edge of the glass. The amount of time this takes depends on the size of the candle, but it is usually about 1-3 hours. The wick should always be trimmed to about 1/4 inch with a candle trimmer before each use to prevent the candle from smoking. If the candle should begin to smoke during use, snuff out the candle, trim the wick and light again.
