Candle Folklore and Legend

The origins of candles are not known; however, there is evidence that beeswax candles were used as far back as Egypt and Crete in 3000 BC.   Early candles consisted of fibrous materials like rushes, saturated with tallow.  

Candles have a long history with religious groups, magic, and folklore.  Candles light the way to the sacred; dispel the forces of darkness; they are associated with ghost and the dead; they can find buried treasure; and they play a role in dream development. 

Ancient People:  Candle flames can reveal mysterious things!  By staring into a flame, one could enter an altered state of consciousness and see gods and spirits, or see the future.  

Ancient Pagans:  Candles were used in religious observances, a practice which the Roman Christian theologian Tertullian vehemently protested as "the useless lighting of lamps at noonday".    It is of note that by the 4th century candles were part of Christian rituals as well!

Witch Hunt Lore:  During the witch hunt of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, inquisitors handbooks prescribed holy candles as a consecrated object to preserve oneself from injury from witches.

Are Candle Trimmers Really Necessary?   The first burn of a candle is the key to providing the proper even burn for prolonging the life of the candle. The burn should be long enough to create a melt pool that covers the top of the candle to the edge of the glass. The amount of time this takes depends on the size of the candle, but it is usually about 1-3 hours. The wick should always be trimmed to about 1/4 inch with a candle trimmer before each use to prevent the candle from smoking. If the candle should begin to smoke during use, snuff out the candle, trim the wick and light again. Always keep candles out of drafts and on level surfaces, because this will prevent uneven burning and smoking.
